Home Game Comes w/ Playoff Payoff
Friday, April 03, 2009

There are two games left in the Gwinnett Gladiators 2008-2009 regular season and there are two games left in the Mississippi Sea Wolves 2008-2009 regular season. And which team makes their way into the Kelly Cup South Division Semi-Finals to play the Florida Everblades will probably decide on some very simple ideals – which team is smart enough and willing enough to do what it takes to keep going. Simply put – who wants it more?

The Gladiators currently hold the lead in the standings and also presently have 30 regular season wins and six OT losses (the statistical equivalent of earning a tie) to the Sea Wolves 28 regular season wins and eight OT losses. In other words, if the Gladiators win – the Sea Wolves can’t catch them. But, if they don’t – and the Sea Wolves do win – this thing could go down to the wire.

Here are the scenarios (and there are plenty of them):

    • If the Gladiators win Friday night at home against the Stingrays and the Sea Wolves lose to Florida on Friday night, the Gladiators will clinch the fourth and final South Division playoff spot.

    • If the Gladiators win Friday night and the Sea Wolves lose in OT on Friday night, the Gladiators will clinch the fourth and final South Division playoff spot.

    • If the Gladiators win on Friday night and the Sea Wolves win on Friday night, the final playoff spot would be decided on Saturday night. In this scenario, the Gladiators could clinch in Charlotte on Saturday with either a win or an OT loss. If, however, the Glads were to lose on Saturday night after winning on Friday and Mississippi were to win both Friday and Saturday vs. Florida, the Sea Wolves would clinch the last spot.

    • If the Gladiators lose on Friday night and the Sea Wolves win on Friday night, the Gladiators would need to win on Saturday night at Charlotte and have the Sea Wolves lose in regulation on Saturday night at Florida in order for the Glads to make the playoffs.

    • If the Gladiators lose to the Stingrays (in regulation or OT) on Friday night and the Sea Wolves lose to the Everblades (in regulation or OT), the final playoff spot will be determined on Saturday night. If this occurs, the Gladiators could clinch on Saturday night by either winning the game outright at Charlotte, losing to Charlotte in OT with the Sea Wolves losing in OT at Florida on Saturday night or the Glads would clinch simply by the Sea Wolves losing again on Saturday night regardless of the outcome of the Gladiators game vs. Charlotte.

In other words, after nearly six months of hockey, it all comes down to these two games for the Gladiators. Should the Gwinnett clinch the final playoff berth, the ECHL South Division Semi-Finals Best-of-Seven Playoff Schedule looks like this:

Game 1: Friday, April 10th Gladiators @ Florida Everblades 7:35 PM
Game 2: Saturday, April 11th Gladiators @ Florida Everblades 7:35 PM
Game 3: Thursday, April 16th Florida Everblades @ Gwinnett 7:05 PM
Game 4: Friday, April 17th Florida Everblades @ Gwinnett 7:35 PM
Game 5:* Sunday, April 19th Florida Everblades @ Gwinnett 4:05 PM
Game 6:* Tuesday, April 21st Gladiators @ Florida Everblades 7:35 PM
Game 7:* Wednesday, April 22nd Gladiators @ Florida Everblades 7:35 PM

* (if necessary)

Regardless of the ups and downs that the team has faced this season, the adversity, the frustrations and the learning curve…one thing is for sure – it will be an exciting finish. Stay tuned...
