Glads Fall 3-2 to Blades in OT in Game 2 Saturday, April 11, 2009
The Gwinnett Gladiators couldn’t hold a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Florida Everblades in Game 2 of the best-of-7 Division Semifinals. Josh Johnson made 40 saves in the loss for Gwinnett as the series shifts to the Arena at Gwinnett Center for Game 3 on Thurday, April 16th at 7:05 p.m. Zanoski’s second goal of the post season gave Gwinnett a 1-0 lead on the Everblades in the opening period. Zanoski stripped the puck from an Everblades defenseman just inside the Florida blue line and walked in untouched on Leggio and ripped a snap-shot past the netminder for the goal. Zanoski’s marker came unassisted at 6:40 of the first period.
Kaleniecki finished a quick passing play deep in the Florida zone on the power play to put the Gladiators up 2-0 on the Everblades at 16:09 of the first period. Jeff Mason didn’t pick up an asssist on the goal but kept the play alive chopping the puck down at the Florida blueline before rolling it down the wing to Zanoski. Adam Berti then took a pass from Zanoski in the corner and whipped the puck across the ice to a waiting Kaleniecki on the off post to set up the marker.
Gwinnett held the Everblades off in the second period to take a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. Gladiators netminder Josh Johnson came up with a handful of big saves in the period to keep the Everblades off the board including a stop on a Florida penalty shot chance.
Milan Gajic was awarded a penalty shot for the Everblades at 13:47 of the second as he had the puck knocked off his stick by a flailing Gladiators defenseman who also took down the Everblades forward on the break. Referee Jason Rollins awarded Gajic a penalty shot which was denied by Johnson to keep the Gladiators in front by a pair of goals.
Milan Gajic got the Everblades on the board on the power play just 1:16 into the third period. Parked on the off wing on the power play, Gajic found a rebound and flicked the puck past Johnson for the marker to cut the Gladiators lead to 2-1. Mathieu Roy and and Peter Metcalf added the assists on the goal that came just 5 seconds into a power play.
Kevin Baker, the ECHL’s Regular Season leading scorer, tied the game at two with his first goal of the post season. Baker found a loose puck in the high slot and walked in all alone on Johnson and flicked the puck over the netminder’s shoulder for the marker. Gajic and Metcalf had the assists on the goal for the Everblades that sent the contest to overtime.
Jacob Micflikier posted the game winner for Florida at 12:52 of overtime ripping a slapshot over the shoulder of Josh Johnson from the top of the right wing circle for the tally. Metcalf had his third assist of the night for the Everblades on the goal while Roy had his second helper for Florida.
Johnson finished with 40 saves in the losing effort for the Gladiators while Gwinnett managed just 25 shots in the contest in the loss. Gwinnett went 1-for-8 on the power play while Florida scored both of their goals in regulation on the power play on seven chances.
