Memorial Cup Continues thru Sunday Tuesday, May 19, 2009
The Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets have advanced to the Memorial Cup Championship game on Sunday with a 6-4 win over the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Drummondville Voltigeurs on Monday night. Through Monday night’s action, Kelowna is unbeaten as the tournament round robin play wraps up on Wednesday night. The Memorial Cup round robin tournament is the Canadian Hockey League’s Junior Hockey Championship comprised of the three champions from the CHL member leagues (WHL - Western Hockey League, OHL - Ontario Hockey League, QMJHL - Quebec Major Junior League) and the junior team from the host city. This year, the Rimouski Oceanic are hosting the tournament in Rimouski, Quebec.
Players chosen in the National Hockey League draft come from the three Major Junior Leagues as well as from US and Canadian colleges and universities. In addition, players not drafed by an NHL team can be signed as free agents by the teams in the NHL as well as in the American Hockey League and the ECHL. Last year, eight players who were on the Gladiators playoff roster played junior hockey in the OHL, QMJHL or WHL. Former Gladiator Joel Stepp won a Memorial Cup with the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels during the 2000-01 season.
